Q: Can’t companies provide their own business continuity services?
A: Not necessarily. Back-up
equipment, security, continuity seating, personnel, a separate facility,
power generators, redundancy and the technology needed to keep a company
running in the event of a disaster is an enormous financial burden. Data
Chambers offers companies a very cost-effective way to insure that they
can continue to serve their customers in the event of disaster.
Q: Do you think that the evolution
of the business continuity industry comes as a result of our fear of terrorism or in addition to
our nation’s heightened state of alert?
A: No, it’s not fear that’s
driven the creation of Data Chambers, but sheer common sense. Companies
have realized that they can no longer stomach the enormous cost of business
failures. In just 2002 alone, $106 billion in revenue was lost due to
business failures. This just includes the business that was lost, it does
not include the loss of facilities or tangible resources. Of the companies
that experience failures, 94 percent go out of business within two years
after the disaster. We know that the six percent that survive made it
because they had some kind of business continuity plan in place.
There is also another reason for the
creation of the business continuity industry. Because of the inter-dependency
of technology, it’s no longer just the huge, multi-million dollar
corporations that are invested in complex data systems. Today, even small
and medium-sized companies now have a sizable technological component
that drives their investments and ways of doing business. Every company
has an obligation to protect these resources.
Q: What kind of screening do
your employees receive? What sets them apart?
A: We conduct a thorough background
check on every employee hired. In addition, depending on which level (1-4)
of security the employee is given access to, we conduct additional screenings.
For example, an employee authorized to be in Level 2 areas only receives
classified clearance. Employees authorized to enter Level 4 have had NSA
background checks.
In addition, our security officers are held to
a higher qualification standard than traditional security officers. They
must complete a background check that includes a criminal check, a psychological
screening, a physical fitness exam and complete medical screening. The
selected individuals demonstrate intelligence, interest and motivation
and have the ability to do well under stressful situations. In addition,
each member of our security staff must meet one of the following qualifications:
former police officer, police academy-trained, former military, former
military police, former elite forces-military, former federal agency officer,
former correction officer or have a criminal justice degree.
